The Parshallville Mill, like all water powered grist mills, has the ability to control the water level that flows in and out of the turbine. The water comes into the turbine from the mill pond via a 52” in diameter flume pipe. The water enters the tank from the flume pipe and the rotary turbine begins to turn, the more water we deliver to the turbine, the faster the turbine rotates. The turbine was built by Joseph Leffel & Co, of Springfield Ohio . It has approx. 70 hp. with 13ft. head of water. There is a metal shaft attached to the turbine which turns and that power is transferred from the shaft through a large wooden gear. That gear is made of hard rock maple, which in turn is attached to a number of wheels (pulleys) that have 6”wide belts turning them. All of this power is transferred to a generator that in turn can create electric power. |
